PLACE TO SKATE / SANKT MORITZ: Skating around the lake
A favorite destination for mountain lovers and a certain kind of snobbish tourism, Sankt Moritz is in any case one of the pearls of the Alps, surrounded by beautiful mountains like the Bernina and with the particularity of being located right on the banks of a fantastic alpine lake.
Thanks to the efficiency of Swiss roads, it is possible to practice skating in complete safety, with the presence of cycle paths and dedicated skating routes. The place is particularly suitable for high altitude training (in fact, Sankt Moritz is often a place of retreat for athletes, especially marathons or endurance sports) thanks to the presence of a natural ring that runs all around the lake. The distance to cover is about 4.5 kilometers, so ideal for a fun walk with leisure skates, or to be used as a repetition lap for training with fitness or speed skates.
The lake, however, provides an excellent alternative even in winter: in fact, its waters freeze and allow the practice of ice skating, with a very large surface and the enchanted scenery of the Engadine covered with snow.
To reach Sankt Moritz it is possible to drive through the Maloja pass (from Chiavenna) or, in summer, climbing the Bernina (starting from Tirano) through fabulous scenery at almost three thousand meters of altitude.
